ChatGPT stopped being an ad-free surface in 2026. With roughly a billion monthly users, about 2.5 billion prompts a day, and a traffic rank behind only Google, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, it is the largest new advertising surface since the social feed, and it is young enough that early movers are buying attention at a discount.
The rollout, in order
February 2026 · The pilot
US launch for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers. Ads appear as clearly labeled sponsored cards below the organic answer, with a title, short description, image, and link. They never change what the model says.
May 2026 · Self-serve opens
The Ads Manager opens at ads.openai.com. The minimum spend requirement is removed, CPC and CPM bidding go live, and small businesses get access. The journey from invite-only pilot to open self-serve took 86 days.
August 2026 · Nine markets
Advertiser access spans the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico, with Europe listed as coming soon. Early campaigns include Best Buy, Lowe's, and VistaPrint.
Why this is different from search ads
A search keyword tells you what someone typed. A conversation tells you what they are trying to decide. Targeting is conversational: the topic of the current chat, past chats and memory, and prior ad interactions, with no third-party cross-web tracking and no conversation data shared with advertisers. Reporting is aggregated by design, closer to connected TV than to Google Ads. That is a privacy architecture, not a temporary gap, so set measurement expectations accordingly.
The audience skews young: adults under 30 are the platform's heaviest users, and nearly half of all messages come from users under 26. For consumer brands that is the pitch. For B2B it means the researcher is on ChatGPT even when the signer is not.
The catch for high-trust brands
Paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) never see ads, and the founders, investors, and executives BlazeGEO works with disproportionately sit on those tiers. The ad reaches the researcher and the wider market; the decision-maker often sees only the organic answer above it.
The organic answer is the asset. Ads are the amplifier.
If ChatGPT already recommends you when the ad-free executive asks, a paid placement below that answer compounds it. If it recommends your competitor, your ad is a paid frame around their endorsement.
How to prepare
- 1. Win the organic answer first. That is GEO: entity consistency, citable pages, presence on the sources engines read.
- 2. Test your visibility before funding the auction. If AI does not name you today, fix that first; it is cheaper and it compounds.
- 3. Move early where the audience fits. Conversational intent at low auction competition will not stay cheap.
- 4. Build the creative for the format: one card, one claim, one next step. The chat card is closer to a recommendation than a billboard.
BlazeGEO runs both layers: the organic answer through GEO, and ChatGPT ad campaigns where the audience fits. Start by testing your organic visibility with the free checker.
